Watching a sea turtle return to the ocean is pure magic.
If you’re planning a trip to the Florida Keys, watching a sea turtle release might be the most unforgettable thing you do and yes, it’s open to the public!
We’ve been lucky enough to catch several releases over the years. They’re not scheduled like traditional tours. These happen on turtle time. That’s what makes them so real and special.
Here’s exactly how to catch one. What to watch for, where to go, and how to make sure you don’t miss it.

🐢 5 Tips for Seeing a Sea Turtle Release in the Florida Keys

Stay Out of the Water
This one’s important. The release won’t happen if someone is in the water, even far down the beach. If you want to see the turtle reach the ocean, make sure you and your group stay dry until the team gives the all-clear. It’s the easiest way to make sure the moment actually happens.
Be Patient
Turtle Time Is Real
Sometimes the release happens on time. Sometimes it’s an hour later. The team works around the turtle’s needs, not a public schedule. That’s part of the beauty. Let your kids play, bring a book, and enjoy the ocean while you wait.

Arrive Early for Parking and a Good View
Even if a release is scheduled for 10:00 AM, plan to be there at least 30–45 minutes early. This gives you time to find parking, get your beach spot, and settle in. Bring towels, chairs, and snacks. This can turn into a full morning adventure!
Know the Location
Most turtle releases happen at Sombrero Beach in Marathon, FL. It’s a beautiful family-friendly beach with restrooms and shaded areas. Parking costs $5/hour, and spaces fill up quickly on release days especially during tourist season.

Follow the Turtle Hospital
The Turtle Hospital in Marathon is responsible for rehabilitating injured sea turtles and releasing them back into the wild. They announce releases on @marathonturtlehospital on Instagram , but there’s no set schedule. They release the turtles when they’re ready. Following them is the only way to know when a release might happen while you’re in the area.

We used to volunteer to collect and relocate turtle eggs on Key Biscayne to keep them safe, and then supervise their release. Such an incredible experience. We did this around 5 in the morning, before beach goers arrived. the turtle release in Marathon sounds quite nice, with scheduled 10 am releases.
